Thyrotoxic Pretibial Circumscribed Myxedema. Presented by DR. MEYER L. NIEDELMAN, DR. ADOLPH BLEIER, and (by invitation) DR. P. MURGUEYTIO.

M. K., a white woman aged 49, presented an elevated, erythematous, spongy area on the outer surface of the right leg with swelling and surrounding edema. There were a few shiny papules on the surface and a few purpuric areas. About five years ago she developed a severe sunburn with blistering on the lower part of the right leg. The area remained erythematous and sensitive and has assumed its present state.

The patient has hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and is obese, with marked postural edema. Her blood pressure is 200/100.

Her fasting blood sugar on Jan. 10, 1955, was 280 mg. per 100 cc.; her basal metabolic rate was +23. Routine blood count was within normal limits; the blood cholesterol was 200 mg. per 100 cc. The serologic tests for syphilis were . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
