Dermatology in Latin America

The growth and development of dermatology in Latin America has been remarkable since the turn of the century. From practical nonexistence it has achieved a position of great importance. This has been largely due to the inspiring influence of a few pioneers who were the founders of the different dermatologic schools scattered through Central and South America.

During the last few years the contact between dermatologists of this country and our colleagues of Latin America has increased considerably. For this reason I believe it is timely to present a short review—and therefore of necessity incomplete—of the history and development of dermatology in the Latin American countries.

No historical review of this type has ever been made. The data had to be obtained directly at the source. This task would never have been accomplished without the enthusiastic assistance and cooperation of some of my friends . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
