In recent years, evidence has been accumulating to show that urticaria pigmentosa, a disease characterized by the presence of numerous tissue mast cells in the dermis, is a systemic disorder. However, full investigation is hindered by the paucity of autopsy material. Fatal cases appear to be exceedingly rare. It is possible that fatal cases have gone undiagnosed in the past, since the skin lesions may not have been typical, with the result that the special metachromatic staining, necessary for the identification of the mast cells, was not carried out. Of particular interest is the report of Ellis1 of an autopsy performed on a child; in this case, large numbers of mast cells were found in many of the internal organs. The majority of the patients are children, in whom the disease is often self-limiting.
