For many years dermatologists and surgeons have been experimenting with a variety of methods and techniques for treating deep-pitted scars which would produce results acceptable to the patient and satisfactory to the operator. None thus far developed has given the desired lasting and perfect result sought after.

At the present time two methods are widely in use for smoothing over the area of the superficial type of scar, sandpapering and use of wire brushes. Both give fairly satisfactory results in most cases, but are only part of the answer to the whole problem of scar treatment. The discovery of a satisfactory method for treating deeply depressed scars still presents a challenge.
