Idiopathic Atrophoderma of Pasini and Pierini

The study of the cutaneous atrophies is one of the many obscure chapters in dermatology. In this article we shall discuss a peculiar cutaneous atrophy described by Pasini1 in 1923, under the title of progressive idiopathic atrophoderma, which has received no attention as such in the American dermatologic literature and is not mentioned in any textbooks in English. The Argentine dermatologists, especially Luis Pierini, have, since 1936, studied this condition and its possible relation to localized scleroderma (morphea). During the past 20 years Pierini2 has observed over 50 cases of this condition, which indicates that it is not uncommon. It was the reading of those reports in the Argentine literature and the opportunity afforded by the study of one of the original cases that prompted one of us (O. C.) to gather material which is the subject of this presentation.
