Dermatological Nomenclature

Nomenclature is defined in Webster's New International Dictionary as: "The system of names used in a particular branch of knowledge or art." According to Rattner1 in his scholarly paper with historical review ". . . the purpose of nomenclature is to facilitate the interchange of knowledge, to be a means of scientific communication." He suggested simplification of nomenclature for undergraduate students. I should heartily agree and believe the same is valuable for the young resident in dermatology as well. Pillsbury, Shelley, and Kligman2 have simplified nomenclature without sacrifice of clarity.

Since 1955, I have been the proud but uneasy chairman of a Committee on Nomenclature of the American Academy of Dermatology and Syphilology. Other members of the committee are: Herman Beerman, Maurice Costello, Roy Kile, Hamilton Montgomery, Herbert Rattner, and Francesco Ronchese.
