Diffuse Alopecia of the Scalp. Presented by THOMAS H. STERNBERG, M.D. and (by invitation) RONALD M. REISNER, M.D.

Age: 23; sex: F; occupation: receptionist; race: Caucasian.

Significant Family History.—

Patient's father and brother showed early male-pattern baldness, and all men on the father's side of the family have also shown early balding. The patient's mother's hair is thinning to some extent at the present time. There is a strong family history of allergy.

Significant Personal History.—

The patient's weight has been normal. She has had no previous skin trouble and no history of hirsutism. Her menstrual periods have been entirely normal. She has taken thyroid extract about grain a day off and on for the past 2 years, but has taken no other significant medications or endocrine preparations. The patient has also used dextro amphetamine (Dexedrine) on occasion as an aid to weight reduction.
