Report The Finsen Memorial Congress

It was my pleasure to be a member of the Third International Congress on Photobiology, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from July 31 to August 5, 1960. This meeting was held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Niels R. Finsen for whom it was named.

A return visit to the Finsen Institute in Copenhagen after 30 years revealed the revolutionary change in the treatment of tuberculosis of the skin. In 1930, the use of the Finsen apparatus was the standard treatment at the institute; in 1960, the Finsen apparatus serves only as a reminder of past and abandoned methods, since then replaced by newer and more effective chemotherapy. I am grateful to Professors Paul V. Marcussen and Gustav Asboe-Hansen, through whose courtesy I was able to tour the various departments of this distinguished institute.
