"INTERFINGER" WEBS

To the Editor:—

The word "interdigital," for all its deep roots in dermatologic terminology, is really not very useful; in most situations it has to be laboriously qualified as "of the hand(s)" or "of the foot (or feet)."

I suggest that interdigital webs of the hands be called "interfinger" webs, and those of the feet, "intertoe" webs. These words are shorter, more exact, and perfectly understandable; their only shortcoming, unfamiliarity, will disappear quickly with use. If the webs are numbered from 1 to 4, in the same direction as the fingers, it is easy to locate a lesion between, say, the third and fourth toes of the left foot as being on the "left third intertoe web."
