Blastomycosis

A recent experience with the treatment of a case of blastomycosis of the skin and its treatment with amphotericin B is the occasion for this review and case report.

In 1894 Gilchrist reported the first case of blastomycosis involving the skin, and this was later described in his article2 in 1896. Two forms of this illness are recognized: (1) the type in which only the skin is involved, and (2) the systemic form in which multiple organs, including the skin, are invaded by the organism.3 In the systemic form of the disease, about 50% would have respiratory symptoms, and 23% had subcutaneous nodules or abscesses. Those with involvement of the skin had involvement of the face (49%), the hands and wrist (25%), arms (20%), and leg (18%).
