To the Editor:—

We have read with great interest Dr. Alfred Hollander's fine report of the Finsen Memorial Congress published in the March ARCHIVES OF DERMATOLOGY (Hollander, A.: The Finsen Memorial Congress, ARCH. DERM. 83:499 (March) 1961). At the Congress there were several meetings running concurrently, and we had the opportunity to attend other of the sessions and would like to add the following comments to Dr. Hollander's review. It is our belief that one of the unfortunate necessities of a large meeting is the separation of the so-called basic from the so-called applied portions of the program. It is our belief that the meeting ground between basic and applied research is an important area for the generation of new ideas and new comprehension.
