The retirement of an editor of an outstanding medical journal in this country is a noteworthy event. It is customary to recognize the achievements of the retiring editor and to predict a splendid future for the successor. On Jan. 1, 1962, Dr. Herbert Rattner retired from the Editorial Board of the ARCHIVES OF DERMATOLOGY after serving in various capacities for almost 35 years. This record may not be unique in American medicine, but I doubt if many physicians in our era have devoted as many consecutive years to a single periodical as the recent incumbent, meanwhile holding an important academic post and conducting a rewarding private practice. This prolonged term of service may be attributed to a series of unusual circumstances associated with the editorial career of the retiring Editor.
