Retiring presidents have often reported informally to the American Board of Dermatology, and on occasion these reports have been published. Having had particular interest in the written examinations during the greater portion of my service on the Board, it seems natural for me to report on the modification of the written examinations as given during this period. Since its inception in 1932, the Board has included the passing of the written examination as one of the requirements for certification (except for an initial group of experienced practitioners certified without examination). In general the written examinations have excluded 5% to 15% of the candidates from the oral examination which followed; many have later repeated the written examination successfully and have then been orally examined and received certification. Never has success in the written examination been the principal criterion for certification.
