On May 17, 18, and 19, 1962, over 30 investigators met in New York City for an international conference on the mastocyte-basophil (M.B.) system. Arranged by Jacques Padawer, John Rebuck, and William L. Simpson, the meeting was held under the aegis of the New York Academy of Sciences. The papers and discussion will form another fascicle of the Academy proceedings which should appear this fall. It is hoped to reprint in this work the classic monograph of Michels which has been a guide to all mast cell students for the past quarter century.

The conference participants were of varied complexions, attesting to the chemotactic powers of the remarkable mast cell. Some were anatomists fascinated by the vivid tinctorial properties of the cell. Others were chemists who had found in the mast cell the cytologic origin of their enzymes and compounds.
