O'Brien's comments are welcome in that they are written by an expert. His outstanding original work has not been depreciated by my contribution; it was, and still is, my intention to explain the genesis of poral closure which he was among the first to describe.¹ This was made quite clear in column 1, page 59 of my contribution.²

Patency of Keratin Ring (See O'Brien's comments on Figs. 6, 8, and 11).—

This can only be assessed by comparison. The appearances which I described, in sweat pores from thousands of serial sections from early miliaria lesions, were judged by the same standards of patency that I used in thousands of serial sections of normal skin. By contrast, the keratotic or parakeratotic plugs in late or "classical" miliaria, as described by O'Brien and others, as seen in my material in chronic miliaria, and as reproduced 2 weeks after . . .
