Lupus Erythematosus vs. Dermatomyositis. Presented by DR. LAURENCE J. UNDERWOOD and DR. WALTER S. GREEN.

History.—

The present dermatosis in this 82-year-old Caucasian woman began in June, 1961. She states the first signs appeared on the elbows, followed shortly by lesions on the fingers and redness of the scalp and periorbital regions. She had noticed increasing sparseness of the scalp hair over the preceding years, but the hair had not been heavy for several years. The only symptom with the present condition has been a very persistent and, at times, severe "burning, smarting or itching" on the scalp. Sunlight seems to irritate the lesions.

The patient feels quite well for her age. There is no background of atopic disorders. No medication, except for occasional "Empirin" or acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and medicine prescribed by the presenter, has been taken for several months.
