Improvements in radiotherapy of skin cancer can be achieved through fuller knowledge of the biologic effects of radiation. This preliminary study attempts to reach a better understanding of the basic effects by a careful analysis of histopathologic changes following conventional superficial roentgen irradiation of 3 lesions of basal cell carcinoma. The changes were observed in multiple specimens from each tumor removed by biopsy at intervals during and after the periods of therapy.
Material and Methods
Biopsy specimens of each tumor were taken before x-ray therapy was instituted, before each treatment was given, and at intervals after completion of each course of treatment.
Tumors 1 and 2 were in the same patient, a 74-year-old man. Tumor 1, which he asserted had been present only 6 months, was an ulcerated tumor of the helix and posterior surface of the left ear, measuring 3 cm. in diameter. Four millimeter punch biopsy specimens were
