Diagnosis: Dermatomyositis. Presented by DR. HARRY SHATIN.

History.—

The patient, a white male, 64-years-old, has had progressive weakness and pain in the lower back and thighs since July, 1961, to the point where he is almost confined to a wheel chair. He was hospitalized on March 6, 1962, having been referred to the orthopedic service. He also complained of a nonpruritic eruption of the face and upper trunk, present about 3 months, as well as swelling of the eyelids and cheeks of 2 months duration.

The patient had a resection of Grade III rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma on Dec. 1, 1960 with no evidence of distant metastases at the time of operation.

Examination.—

There is point tenderness over the midthoracic and lumbosacral spines. There is definite atrophy of the muscles of the shoulder girdle with tenderness on palpation of the deltoids and inability to raise the arms. There is similar marked muscle . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
