The recent uncovering of important immunologic pathways and the increase in both the number and sensitivity of immunologic techniques have clearly demonstrated the potential importance of immune mechanisms in many human diseases. One consequence has been the appearance of a massive number of research publications making it difficult to keep abreast of the important developments.

A new series, Advances in Immunology, provides an important service. The preface to Volume 1 states that "the purpose of this series will be to present timely reviews of various topics in immunology that not only will serve to keep investigators informed but will also try to unify the concepts."
