Pityriasis Lichenoides et Varioliformis Acuta (Mucha-Haberman); Toxic Vasculitis. Presented by DR. WILLIAM R. HILL.

An Italian boy, aged 13, is presented with a polymorphous eruption on the trunk and extremities. This consists of pityriasis-like macular papules, lichenoid papules, umbilicated papules, and hemorrhagic macular papules. The onset was sudden, and new lesions continued to appear for 15 days. Biopsy showed a toxic vasculitis.

Treatment has consisted of generalized ultraviolet light therapy.

Discussion

DR. MAURICE M. TOLMAN: I agree with the diagnosis, except for the use of the phrase "toxic vasculitis" in association with this case. I will not enter into debate as to what pathology may show with regard to vasculitis, but until it is proved that this is a basic generalized toxic vasculitis, rather than a local situation, the term "toxic vasculitis" applied here is misleading and dangerous, and also frightening to the patients.
