From the Editor:

Dr. Kerdel-Vegas' title for his letter-to-the-editor, "Semantics and Reality," is well chosen. Since administrative ground rules vary considerably in medical schools in this country and abroad, the meaning (the significance) of words such as "Cátedra", department, division, and section will vary. Regardless of semantics, there is no excuse for inhibiting the development of any specialty in a medical school. When a speciality is restricted, the students, the patients, and research suffer. After all, the purpose of a medical school is to teach doctors to take care of the sick. Politics and prejudice must not be allowed to interfer with this.

Dr. Lewis and Dr. Kerdel-Vegas are in total agreement that dermatology "must have a high degree of autonomy, control of its budget, its educational programs, and its research effort.
