During an investigation of the Wassermann test as a criterion of cure for syphilis, it became necessary to compile data as to the effect of various antisyphilitic remedies on the Wassermann reaction. Among the drugs thus used was mercurosal, a synthetic compound of mercury, di-sodium-hydroxymercuri-salicyl-acetate, This paper studies influence HgOH presents our studies on the influence of mercurosal in the treatment of serum positive syphilis.
A good antisyphilitic drug must fulfil four requirements: (1) ease and convenience of administration; (2) no toxic effect on the patient; (3) the production of clinical improvement, and (4) the reduction of a positive Wassermann reaction. It is our purpose to record our findings with mercurosal in respect to these four qualifications, with special consideration of the last.
