Summary of Roundtable Discussions On "Goals of Undergraduate Teaching"

OUR DISCUSSION groups agreed that our teaching can be improved. With this in mind we have taken a look at ourselves and listed a set of propositions for your discussion and critical appraisal.

First, some general statements of our overall goals: (1) To fulfill our obligation to the community in educating future physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of skin disease; (2) to foster the art and scientific aspects of medicine through the teaching of dermatology; (3) to utilize dermatologic teachers for the training of students in astute scientific inquiry, and to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic skills. To these ends, the following general principles are regarded as important and desirable: (1) to teach cutaneous medicine as it relates to the entire patient rather than to the skin alone; (2) to teach some dermatology in all years of medical school.
