This supplementary volume deals with the venereal diseases except syphilis and chancroid and with nonvenereal diseases of the genitals. In Europe gonorrhea and nonspecific urethritis belong to dermatology, and part of the volume is devoted to these subjects. For American dermatologists, the chapter on gonorrheal skin lesions by J. Tappeiner and P. Wodniansky (Vienna) is of greater importance; they discuss gonorrheal folliculitis and abscess formation, erythematous eruptions, erythema nodosum, hemorrhagic and bullous skin manifestations, and the rather rare keratosis blennorrhagica, which in addition to other parts of the body may also affect the nails. Very significant, too, is the chapter on the masking or delaying of syphilitic manifestations by treatment of gonorrheal infections with antibiotics. S. Hellerström, Stockholm, who was one of the early investigators of lymphogranuloma venereum, gives a masterful exposition of the epidemiology, etiology, immunity, and serology of the disease, and discusses the Frei test.
