To The Editor.—

The experience with contact dermatitis due to spandex is not limited to this country. D. Munro-Ashman, MD, was the first to report this condition (Trans St John Hosp Derm Soc 52:131, 1966) at a meeting in May 1965. In his report of a 44-year-old woman, a spandex-containing bra was involved, and the patient was also sensitive to mercaptobenzothiazole. The statement was made that "Lycra does not contain rubber accelerators." In a subsequent report (Brit Med J 1:674, 1966) 11 patients with contact dermatitis from spandex yarn are reported having the same positive patch test results. In this report, patch tests to Lycra are reported as being negative. The distribution of the dermatitis in these cases corresponded to the elastic meshwork of the bras as in our cases.
